Forerunners and messengers advance the advent of our God. Zechariah sings that his newborn son will be the instrument through whom God will “give light to those who sit in darkness.” This child grew up to become John the Baptizer. His voice in the wilderness declares that the Lord will come to straighten out crooked ways, and smooth the rough places, so “all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”
